Young Girl, 4, Dies After South Pas Poolside Incident

South Pasadena police are still investigating the death of a 4-year-old girl who was found unresponsive and not breathing poolside in an apartment complex Saturday morning.

Police received a 911 call at around 9:36 a.m. Saturday from an apartment complex in the 1700 block of State Street of a “child not breathing,” said South Pasadena Police Capt. Mike Neff during a phone interview Monday evening.

The 4-year-old girl and her brother were playing near the pool when the girl fell in, according to Ed Winter, assistant chief in the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

“The brother apparently tried to pull her out but could not and he went to get help,” Winter said.

The child was apparently found by a family member, who pulled her out of the pool.

“When we arrived, she was out of the pool,” Neff said. “We think the parents pulled her out. It’s one of the things we are still investigating.”

Meanwhile, when the three police officers first arrived on scene, they “immediately performed CPR,” Neff said.

“We did CPR until the paramedics arrived and then they took over,” he said.

The girl was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital where she later died, Neff said.

SPPD “as a matter of routine” is investigating the death and all indications point to an accident.

“As far as what we can see now, and according to witness statements, it appears to be an accident,” Neff said. He said the ongoing investigation will be in coordination with the Coroner’s Office, which will officially determine the cause of death.

“The autopsy is pending,” Winter said.
