Vaping Forum On Tap At SPHS

In its first educational forum of the year, the South Pasadena High School Parent Teacher Student Association will focus on the issue of vaping with the presentation “Vaping: What You Need to Know,” followed by a question-and-answer session, on Monday, Oct. 28, at 7:15 p.m. in the SPHS library.

The free event is open to the public. Organizers are expecting a large turnout.

The 45-minute presentation will be hosted by Albert Melena, executive director of the nonprofit San Fernando Valley Partnership Inc., which works to promote healthy communities and develop programs to prevent drug use.

“It’s been a topic that we as a PTSA have been hearing bubbling up from parents and our own children,” SPHS PTSA President Laura Morales told the Review. “We felt that this would be a fantastic way to kick off our forums for the year. We are responding to our parent community feedback as well.”

Topics covered will include what it means to vape, different electronic delivery systems, how youth are accessing vaping devices, health concerns related to vaping, signs that a child is vaping and what the consequences of vaping are, on and off campus.

“Our purpose is to advocate for students and parents, and so this is very important to us — our students’ well-being — so [vaping] naturally fell in line,” said Morales.
