Students in South Pasadena Unified School District’s Extended Day Program put together aid packages Monday that will be distributed to homeless persons along Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles by the program’s staff. Last year, program director Jerome Robertson recalled, a staff member gave the pair of shoes on her feet to a homeless man.
Now in its fourth year, Monday’s event was appropriately scheduled for one of the District’s four staff development days. Robertson said he hopes that the activity will teach kids in the program to help those who are less fortunate.
Donations to the program from parents and community organizations included blankets, water bottles, deodorant, hand sanitizer, chap stick and socks. Robertson said that he plans to shift the focus of future outreach efforts to items such as blankets and socks that will provide the homeless with lasting comfort.
