Y members raise funds to support such community programs as youth sports, summer camp and youth leadership programs. Funds are also provided directly to those who need assistance in paying for memberships and fees. The goal is to raise $70,000 before March 15. High School students Henry Barbera (left) and Gus Crain (center) described the South Pasadena San Marino YMCA’s Youth and Government (Y & G) program for volunteer fundraisers attending last week’s community campaign dinner.

Part of the funds raised by the campaigners goes toward Y & G, a unique program that prepares high school students for leadership positions. In addition, more than 20 percent of the participating teens receive a subsidy for fees. Jordan Bell (right), Y & G program director for the YMCA, said he’s seen tremendous growth in the students’ public speaking ability and confidence. “I truly believe we are shaping the leaders for tomorrow,” he said at the fundraising session.
