Award-winning South Pasadena author Danzy Senna will appear at a special literary salon from 7 to 9 p.m. on May 17 at Jones Coffee Roasters, 693 S. Raymond Avenue in Pasadena. The evening is part of the Open Book Series organized by the Pasadena Literary Alliance.
Senna is the author of three novels, a memoir and a short-story collection along with numerous essays centering on the issues of identity, motherhood, gender and race, according to an event announcement from the Alliance. She is the recipient of numerous awards. Her 2017 book, “New People,” has been named a Best Book of the Year by the New York Times.
She will be in conversation with author Chris L. Terry, currently a PEN Center USA Artist in Residence. They will discuss race, gender and identity, according to the announcement.
Her husband, celebrated author Percival Everett, was featured in an earlier Alliance Open Book program Jan. 24 at Boston Court Performing Arts Center in Pasadena.
Senna and Everett live in South Pasadena with their two sons.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.pasadenaliteraryalliance.org/open-book for $65/$35 student/educator. This includes a pre-program reception with beer/wine and appetizers; post-program dessert, coffee and conversation. Proceeds also support Pasadena Literary Alliance grantees.
The Alliance’s Open Book Series provides opportunities for the community to enjoy authors of all kinds in settings that complement an author’s work or background and allow for engagement with attendees, according to the organization.
