One woman was transported to the hospital Tuesday morning with chest pains after a traffic collision sent one of the cars airborne, crashing down onto the curb in front of a South Pasadena restaurant.
South Pas firefighters spent about 30 minutes extricating the female driver of a red Toyota that ended up perched in front of Shakers Family Restaurant at 601 Fair Oaks Ave. The accident occurred about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, according to eyewitnesses.
The woman in the red Toyota was driving southbound on Fair Oaks Avenue in the lane closest to the curb when her car was broadsided by a silver Nissan exiting the 110 Freeway off-ramp, according to South Pasadena Police Officer Bill Earley. The silver Nissan was driven by a woman, who was not injured.
The resulting collision caused the Toyota to spin out of control, striking a curb that sent it airborne. The Toyota then hit a tree before smashing into a wrought iron fence in front of Shakers where it finally came to rest, eyewitnesses told police.
The driver was trapped inside the car and was complaining of chest pains. Firefighters were able to reach the trapped driver through the passenger door, stabilizing her neck with a brace. The driver-side door, however, was jammed shut, forcing rescuers to yank it open. They pulled the woman to safety, transporting her to Huntington Memorial Hospital.
Police closed off the southbound lane closest to the curb in the 600 block of Fair Oaks Avenue for most of the morning.
