South Pasadena Police officers responded to a call Thursday night involving an angry man armed with a sword only to intercept him peacefully and deflate the entire situation,according to police.
Information is sketchy at this juncture but the man suffering from an apparent violent mental episode was trying to break down the door to his parents’ bedroom armed with a sword in their home in the 300 block of Monterey Road at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8.
Police arrived and were able to deescalate the possibly violent confrontation and peacefully take the man to an area hospitalwhere he was treated.
The stepfather of the troubled man was “convinced their lives were saved by the officers,” police said.
“The safety of our community is our top priority,” Interim Police Chief Brian Solinsky said Friday morning. “Our officers receive the best training and equipment possible to ensure they can perform at the highest level. Last night was a great example of all those efforts coming together. Ninety-nine percent of the calls for service we receive end like this, peacefully. The officers showed tremendous restraint and patience, potentially saving a life. I am proud of men and women of the South Pasadena Police Department and the work they do in the community during difficult times.”
