Local Churches Getting In Spirit of Season

Here are some upcoming special events in December at churches in South Pasadena:

Holy Family Catholic Church is sponsoring both an Adopt-A-Family and an Angel Card program to help people in need this holiday season.

Congregants can connect with the church’s Giving Bank and get information on a previously vetted family. Participants will receive information such as sizes, and perhaps a special need to help when shopping for a gift. Another way of helping is to simply send a check. You can go to holyfamily.org and click on the blue online giving tab.

There are also different-color angels at the church’s altar that are color coordinated to buy gifts for boys and girls. And there are angels that will support a person on the street and another one to help serve immigrants in Nogales, Ariz.

The deadline for gifts to be made is Dec. 13.

For further information, call Marlene Moore at the Giving Bank at (626) 403-6141.

St. James Episcopal Church is presenting a living nativity program on Sunday, Dec. 15, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. The young people of the church will present the nativity scene using animals from a Southern California petting zoo. This living nativity, after more than a dozen years, has become a tradition at St. James.

The church will also present Advent Lessons and Carols, at 6 p.m., on Sunday, Dec. 15. It is a candlelit, music-filled service that will feature choral and organ presentations of ancient and new music.

Calvary Presbyterian Church is hosting a “Mission Market” on Dec. 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants donate to one of the organizations in the Mission Market in their name. When you pay at the cashier, calligraphers will fill out a gift card for you to give to your loved one.

The organizations include the Angel Interfaith Network; Calvary Benevolent Fund; Crossroads Women; Habitat for Humanity; Heifer International and several other organizations.
