
Artists and Businesses team up to celebrate the summer season with another fun and family friendly “Neighborhood Night-on-the-Town” on Saturday, July 21, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and produced by SPACE, the South Pasadena Arts Crawl welcomes people of all ages to this free event which offers gallery exhibitions, art activities, live music, open houses, food and drink specials, and sales throughout the business district. Event highlights include:
DeepMix Studios invites visitors to sing a phrase or poem, or play a guitar lick or percussion instrument, contributing to a musical collage, created by Brad Colerick, and posted on social media.
The South Pasadena Library presents a guitar performance by Goh Kurosawa accompanied by an exhibit of Pete Morris’ drawings and paintings and a film about the artist. In the Library’s Community Room from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Artisans’ Corner offers a range of art, gifts and jewelry from Bellagazoo, Kiser Originals, Thunderbachs, Precious Few on Earth, SOPA Artists, Sonali Kolhatkar, Polyfaction, Glassy Act, One Dae Handmade, Arigo Mama, and Roving Mushroom.
On the lawn of the South Pasadena Historical Museum, Marie Switzer Miller leads families in creating a giant scrabble game.
Venues feature live music and entertainment
Dinosaur Farm and Kidd’s Jewelry Heist host “The Kids Are Alright Night” in their back parking lot, featuring performers 21 and under, with Charley Hickey headlining. Plus face painting and a $5 bracelet bonanza.
Hot Box Vintage celebrates their new location with a grand opening party and live music by Siam Jem and Annika Saige. Good Citizen Media presents Bungalow Bill’s Jumpin’ Jam in the courtyard from 6 – 9 p.m., and at Griffin’s of Kinsale the Crane Lake Serenaders play at 8:30pm. Retreat features singer- songwriter Jackson Mankowski. South Pasadena Music Center and Simplee Boba also host a variety of live music performances.
Harvest Architecture brings on a summer tradition of outdoor movies, screening a film on the back wall of the Rialto Theatre. Popcorn included!
Galleries and businesses celebrate the visual arts with a variety of exhibitions and activities
At Two Kids Coffee, artists Cole & Sara Montgomery offer a “relief printing” workshop in our space for kids & adults. At DeMilo Design Studio, come create a marble flower garland and/or make your own print on the vintage Chandler & Price press. Camille DePedrini features the photography of Randy Shropshire. The boutique, along with Rue de Mimo and Marz, offers a sale of 30-50% off selected items. Marz also features the yummy treats of Cake Girl, a plant- based baker of cupcakes and cookies.
SPARC Gallery at the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce exhibits “It’s About Time”, a solo exhibition, by Shelley Stephens, of paintings and collages inspired by ethnic societies. Nexusplex and the Southpasadenan presents ‘710,” an exhibit of artifacts, displays, books, and videos describing the successful fight in South Pasadena to stop the 710 freeway extension.
Sugarmynt Gallery hosts the group art exhibitions “Dames & Butterflies” and “Pre-Haddonfield 4.” Old Focals presents an exhibition of watercolor paintings by Jon Huck (jonhuckart.com.) Peltier Home features “Fresh Paint,” new paintings by Laurie Hendricks, and a floor sample sale. Rosebuds and Rosestuds hosts face painting and henna artist Katie Matie.
The new vintage retailer, Picky Jane, features artwork and clothing by artist Meghan Jorgenson who creates dreamy contemporary works from watercolor, natural minerals and plants. La Monarca Bakery hosts the pop up shop “Raggedy Tiff,” specializing in accessories, apparel, and home décor.
Foodies are welcome at the Arts Crawl as Mission Wines kicks off the event with a 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. pre-party with a special beer tasting, and La Fiesta Grande offers a ceviche appetizer special and a margarita special, while Moo on Misson gives a free waffle cone with ice cream purchase. Twohey’s and LA Shaved Ice food trucks deliver on-the-go eating options.
Patrons can park in the Mission/Meridian Parking lot (north of Mission Street, on Meridian), and walk to the more than 20 participating shops and boutiques. The Metro Gold Line South Pasadena Station will put you right in the heart of the event.
The quarterly Arts Crawls are presented by the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, and produced by SPACE, to provide a showcase for artists and musicians and to highlight the city’s unique business district.
